Sublimation printing is a specialised printing method that is often used for transferring full-colour designs onto various materials; we use this specifically for mug printing - often it is materials such as fabric and metal. The sublimation printing method is known for its ability to produce a high-quality, vibrant and long-lasting finish with a high level of detail for all to see.
The Sublimination Printing Process
The sublimation printing process involves the use of heat and ‘sublimation ink’. The sublimation printing process is as follows:
Step 1: Preparation: The first step in sublimation printing is to create a digital design. This design can include photographs, illustrations, or any other full-colour artwork that is required for a brand or campaign.
Step 2: Transfer: The finalised design is then printed onto a special ‘sublimation transfer paper’ using the unique sublimation ink.
Sublimation ink is different from regular ink as it has the ability to convert from a solid to a gas without passing through a liquid phase.
Step 3: Heat Transfer: The printed transfer paper is placed onto the material to which it will be printed. This assembly is then subjected to heat and pressure using a heat press machine to transfer the design.
Step 4 Printing: As the heat is applied, the sublimation ink on the transfer paper turns into a gas and penetrates the surface of the material. Upon cooling, the ink reverts to a solid state, permanently embedding the design into the material's surface.
The Benefits of Sublimination Printing
There are many advantages of sublimation printing over more common printing techniques. These include:
- Sublimation prints are known for their vibrant colours and durability.
- They do not fade easily, even after repeated washing or sunlight exposure.
- Sublimation printing can reproduce intricate details and gradients accurately, making it ideal for printing photographs and complex designs.
- There is no noticeable texture left on the surface of the material - The ink is absorbed into the material to create a smooth finish.
- Sublimation printing can be used on various materials, making it a very versatile printing option.
- Sublimation allows for full-bleed printing - meaning the design will not leave any visible borders.
